Bursaries

Three bursary opportunities are available to applicants of the 2024 Rare Book School, awarded by the Australian and New Zealand Association of Antiquarian Booksellers (ANZAAB), the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) and the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand (BSANZ).

  • All applications for the Rare Book School will be assessed and notified of the outcome shortly after receipt. We will accept applications until the maximum number of places (15) per course is reached.

25 December 2024: BSANZ Bursary applications close.

8 January 2024: ANZAAB and ILAB Bursary applications close.

3 January 2024: Successful BSANZ bursary applicant will be notified by SLV.

12 January 2024: Payment due for all students accepted by this date to confirm their place, including those unsuccessful in a bursary application.

  • Within the application form for the Rare Book School course of your choice, an option is included to apply for each bursary. You will then be prompted to provide a statement addressing the eligibility criteria (see below for specific details).

Once selected to the Rare Book School course of your choice, SLV will share your name and bursary statement only with the relevant BSANZ and/or ANZAAB committee, which will select an applicant for their respective bursaries. SLV will notify all applicants of the outcome of their bursary application.

  • The Australian and New Zealand Association of Antiquarian Booksellers and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers are pleased to provide two bursaries for two booksellers interested in developing their skills in the field of antiquarian, rare and collectible books. ANZAAB & ILAB hold their members and affiliates to high standards of accuracy in cataloguing and presentation to the public. By partnering with the Australian and New Zealand Rare Book School we aim to provide an invaluable educational opportunity for the successful applicant.

    Application criteria

The ANZAAB bursary will be for a bookseller resident in Australia and will cover the course fee (up to $1000 AUD).

Current ANZAAB members, prospective ANZAAB members and those interested in entering the antiquarian and rare book trade are encouraged to apply.

The ILAB bursary will be for a bookseller who is a non-ANZAAB member residing outside of Australia and will contribute towards tuition fee, accommodation and travel capped at $1000 AUD. All further costs beyond that sum are covered by the applicant.

Current National Association members, or prospective members and those interested in entering the antiquarian and rare books trade are encouraged to apply. Proofs of payment will need to be provided to the ILAB Secretariat in order to approve the reimbursement.

To apply for either the ANZAAB or ILAB bursary, please apply for the course of your choice via the ANZRBS website and include, when prompted, a statement of up to 500 words outlining your experience and interest in the rare book trade, and how attending the Rare Book Summer School will contribute towards this. Applications are due 8 January and successful applicants will be notified early January 2024.

  • The Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand is pleased to offer one bursary opportunity for its membership to support education and training in the study of rare books, including bibliography and material culture.
